What is the difference between BiPAP and CPAP?
A CPAP machine delivers one continuous air pressure to help keep the airway open, and is used mainly for obstructive sleep apnoea. A BiPAP machine delivers two pressures: a higher pressure when breathing in and a lower pressure when breathing out. BiPAP is used when a patient needs help with breathing itself, for example in some cases of COPD or after a hospital stay with breathing failure.
Both machines are prescribed by a doctor, usually a pulmonologist or sleep specialist, who decides the type of machine and pressure settings. Getting comfortable with the mask and machine takes time, and good fitting can make a difference to regular use.
What is included with a BiPAP or CPAP rental?
- Machine with heated humidifier where available.
- New nasal, nasal pillow or full-face mask selected for comfort and fit.
- Pressure set according to the doctor's prescription.
- Demonstration of fitting the mask, starting the machine and cleaning.
- Helpline support during the rental period.
Choosing the right mask
| Mask type | Usually suits |
|---|---|
| Nasal mask | People who breathe through the nose during sleep |
| Nasal pillows | People who find full masks uncomfortable or feel enclosed |
| Full-face mask | Mouth breathers and many BiPAP users |
The mask should seal comfortably without being overtightened. If it leaks, causes sores or feels uncomfortable, contact us; a different size or type may help.

Frequently asked questions
Who sets the BiPAP or CPAP pressure?
Your doctor prescribes the pressure settings. Our team sets the machine to those values and does not change them without the doctor's instruction.
Do I need a sleep study for CPAP?
Sleep apnoea is usually diagnosed with a sleep study, and the doctor prescribes CPAP based on the results.
The mask is uncomfortable. What can I do?
Tell us. A different size or mask type, or small adjustments, may help. Comfort is important for regular use.
How do I clean the mask and humidifier?
Clean the mask regularly with mild soap and water, rinse and air-dry it, and use clean water in the humidifier as instructed. We explain cleaning during setup.
How much does it cost to rent a BiPAP or CPAP machine?
Charges depend on the machine type and rental period. Contact us for a current quote.
Can I travel with the machine?
Many CPAP machines are portable. Ask us before travelling so we can advise on power adapters and packing for your model.
What if I feel more breathless while using BiPAP?
Contact your doctor promptly. If breathlessness is severe, call 108 or go to the nearest hospital.
